4 Simple Activities for 6-9 month olds

Every week I set up my house for the three days I work from home so that I can rotate from room to room and activity to activity to keep Juju occupied while I’m in meetings or doing work. Working from home with a baby isn’t easy, and requires me keeping a strict time sheet of my day job while also making sure Juju’s need for enrichment is fulfilled. I couldn’t do it without the help of my family, especially as my responsibility to my startup isn’t finished. Setting up stations on Sunday night helps me stay sane and turns out to be a lot of fun for Juju. Here are this week’s activities!

Activity 1: Shaving Cream Sensory Bag

Our first activity was a shaving cream sensory bag! I prepped everything on Sunday and just needed to squirt in the shaving cream day of use.

I filled it with some plastic balls and plastic pirates and then started squirting in what I thought was shaving cream. It turned out to be shaving gel! It still worked but was a bit more opaque than I would have liked.

Initially, I tried taping it to the floor but Juju is strong and liked to tear ir up and try to eat it. A compromise (and assistance with pre crawling skills) was hanging it from a hook in the play pen.

Activity 2: BOard Book Circle

Around 7 months babies can start to pivot in circles and engage with board books. By placing them in a circle it encourages Juju to pivot and he gains reading exposure. This activity can also be used over and over again as you turn pages or use new books.

Activity 3: Ribbon Pull

Encouraging a sitter? Or encouraging pulling to knees? This is a great idea with an ever changing backdrop. Use painters tape to secure toilet paper (or paper towel rolls for a greater challenge) and hang ribbon through them. Baby pulls the ribbon and depending on texture can be rewarded with another sensory experience.

Activity 4: Controlled painting

Just in time for the holidays coming up, make some original art masterpieces for family and friends. Baby can safely paint (and without the mess for you) with a few simple items around the house. Grab a plastic bag and a thicker piece of card stock and stick a few drops of paint on one side of the paper. Stick it into the plastic bag and tape down well. Baby can move on top of or touch the plastic to squish the paint into an original design. Just remove it fairly quickly or the paint dries and seals the paper to the plastic.

Thanks for coming along for this week’s fun activities! Stay tuned for more.
